What online courses can I study at The International Hotel School?

Based on materials developed by the American Hotel & Lodging Educational Institute (AHLEI) subjects offered cover the full range of hospitality management disciplines and operational areas. With our flexible Learning Pathways, you can tailor your studies to suit your needs. IHS Online has a wide range of single subjects which lead to various nationally and internationally-recognised courses ranging from IHS Higher Certificate in Hospitality Management NQF Level 5 (SAQA ID No: 88062) and IHS Higher Certificate in Food and Beverage Management NQF Level 5 (SAQA ID No: 88063) to AHLEI Specialisation Certificates and Diplomas.

How does it work and how much does it cost?

Once you’ve applied and you’re ready to start, here are some benefits you can enjoy:

A personal online tutor for assistance; Interactive discussions and opinion polls so that you can learn from and share with others; tutor based assignments aimed at developing your ability to apply concepts to the real world of work; automated assessments with instant results; links to video clips, articles and case studies…and a whole lot more! Each online learning module is offered over a ten week period. Exams are ideally taken no later than six months after completion of each course. The price per individual AHLEI subject is R3 550.00 which includes textbook, electronic study material and exam registration. (The price excludes courier costs related to the delivery of textbooks.)

I am currently a full time 3 year Hospitality Management Diploma Programme student and I discovered that if I completed two additional AHELI subjects through Online Learning, I would then receive the AHLEI Diploma in Food & Beverage Management in addition to the IHS Diploma in Hospitality Management and the AHLEI Diploma in Hospitality Management that I was doing through my Full Time programe. Danielle Cullingworth: How the online work can benefit you is make studying for your exams a lot easier. Personally, it has cut my study time in half. You work through the course content and there are assignments and discussion groups which all help with your studying. Therefore if you work diligently and focus on your answers you will already be half prepared for your exam. Another benefit is that online learning gives you a very clear theoretical view of how things work in the industry. The online tutors are also a very big help. You will come to rely upon them for help, guidance and insight on particular subjects. Do not be afraid to ask them anything regardless of how big or small you may think it is.

Sarah-Jane Varkevisser: It was extremely challenging at times, especially juggling a full time job and having to study part time. With perseverance and hard studies, I committed all the spare time I had to my studies. I went to Sandton to write my subjects and I passed. I have successfully completed the course with all my national qualifications and passed all my subjects.
